Who owns the fish?

Problem-solving is something we do every day at Cleartrip–technical problems, design problems and business problems. We’ve found that problem-solving is a key skill and helpful to have around in abundance. Here’s a brain teaser for people that like puzzles.

There are five houses in a row, and each house is a different colour. The person living in each house has a different nationality. The five residents each drink different drinks, smoke different brands of cigar and have different pets, one of which is a goldfish.

1. The Brit lives in the red house.
2. The Swede keeps dogs as pets.

3. The Dane drinks tea.

4. The green house is on the left of the white house.

5. The green house owner drinks coffee.

6. The person who smokes Pall Malls keeps birds.

7. The owner of the yellow house smokes Dunhills.

8. The man living in the house right in the center drinks milk.

9. The man who smokes Blends lives next to the one who keeps cats.

10. The Norwegian lives in the first house.

11. The man who keeps horses lives next to the one who smokes Dunhills.

12. The owner who smokes Bluemasters drinks beer.

13. The German smokes Princes.

14. The Norwegian lives next to the blue house.

15. The man who smokes Blends has a neighbor who drinks water.

This is not a trick question and there is one true answer–pure applied logic will lead you to the one and only correct answer.

This puzzle was allegedly written by Albert Einstein, who said that 98% of the people in the world would not be able to solve it. Are you one of the exclusive 2%?

With a little help from excel to fill in the matrix, it took less than 30 mins to get this one. So much for just 2% of the world being able to solve this.

Dhruv–We did say "allegedly," or maybe readers of the Cleartrip Blog are just exceptionally bright ;)

  2. @dhruv, bcoz other 98% people just use google to find solution :)

    How to approach this problem:

Take a 5×5 Matrix. Name each column as house 1, house 2 and so on. Each column as Country, Pet, Smokes, Drinks, Colour. The columns does not have to be in no particular order though.

Next simplify each constraint given in the question as:

    1. "The Brit lives in the Red house" as "Brit = Red"
    9. "The man who smokes Blends lives next to the one who keeps cats" as "Blends <> Cats"

Then start with the conditions that you can be 100% sure of, such as "Norwegian = House 1".

    Good luck!

    Oops made a mistake:

"Take a 5×5 Matrix. Name each column as house 1, house 2 and so on. Each column as Country, Pet, Smokes, Drinks, Colour. The columns does not have to be in no particular order though."

    Should be…

"Take a 5×5 Matrix. Name each column as house 1, house 2 and so on. Then each row as Country, Pet, Smokes, Drinks, Colour. The rows does not have to be in no particular order though."

  3. hahaha… good discussion… all google and excel users include in that 98%…
    I think the question should include – PS: dont use google, excel, not even a pen and paper… ;
jus kidding.. i didnt get the thought of using excel… :(
tried for a long time and came to this page, hoping to find the answer :P
