Ten commandments of good design

Looking outside of user interface design is essential for good UI designers and is something we do often at Cleartrip–it provides new perspectives and poses difficult questions that sometimes make one’s head hurt. The work of Dieter Rams, best known for his work with Braun, is the stuff of legend in the industrial design community. Rams’ approach to design continues to inspire legions: Less but better.

Vitsoe, for whom Rams designed the path-breaking 606 Universal Shelving System has a page detailing Rams’ Ten Commandments of Good Design:

  1. Good design is innovative
  2. Good design makes a product useful
  3. Good design is aesthetic
  4. Good design helps a product be understood
  5. Good design is unobtrusive
  6. Good design is honest
  7. Good design is durable
  8. Good design is thorough to the last detail
  9. Good design is concerned with the environment
  10. Good design is as little design as possible

These are rules to live by.

Read the complete text of Rams’ Ten Commandments of Good Design. It’s a short read and is accompanied by some gorgeous photographs of Rams’ creations.

Technically, for good design, shouldn’t it be like this:

    Good design:

    1. is innovative
    2. makes a product useful
    3. is aesthetic
    4. helps a product be understood
    5. is unobtrusive
    6. is honest
    7. is durable
    8. is thorough to the last detail
    9. is concerned with the environment
    10. is as little design as possible
