Buttons that aren’t buttons

I’ve been using ICICI online banking for over 3 years now and there’s always been something that bugged me about their home page (where they provide links to various log-in options for online banking). While signing in today, I realised what my gripe is–the log-in options look like buttons, but they don’t act like buttons. The ‘buttons’ act like links, and that’s annoying.

As you can see, it looks like a big button and gives the impression that you can click any part of the button to get to the page you want; but the only part of it you can click is the part that’s highlighted in the image above i.e. just the word itself.

Why make something look like it can be clicked when it can’t? Why create the perception of a large link target and confuse users? There’s no excuse for this kind of sloppiness in designing interactions–it might seem like a little thing, but paying attention to the little things is critical when you’re trying to deliver a great experience.

  1. true, we end up loving some sites over the other without realizing why. Its these small things that drives our comfort level while using a site…

Whole-heartedly agree. Paying attention to these tiny usability details leads to dramatic lifts in goals converted at the end of the day (whatever that goal might be).

As online marketers, our primary resposibility must be to be true to usability principles, most of which are just sheer common sense (which, I’m told is not all that common).
