A few months ago, we announced a better, slicker, faster Cleartrip Account. Cleartrip Account was the first of our products to get a gorgeous new design and an improved front-end architecture. At the time, we promised to roll out the new design language across other parts of the site:
It has laid the foundation for a raft of amazing super-secret features which we’re already hard at work on.
The 4 step booking process on Cleartrip has seen many incremental changes since we launched, but over the last five years, it’s never been wholly re-imagined and redesigned. Last week, with great excitement, but little fanfare, we rolled out a completely redesigned booking process for flights and hotels.
Ring out the old, ring in the new
This image shows a quick comparison of our old and new booking screens.

Lots has changed, here’s the big ones:
- Orientation – The old booking steps were horizontal with a top-level progress indicator. We’ve changed this to a vertical accordion-style format, which lets you move through the different steps to complete your booking.
- Compact view has been introduced to display a summary of the relevant information for each step you complete in the booking process. The compact view is dramatically more efficient than the right-column summary we were displaying previously.
- Cleaner forms with in-place error handling and better notifications for server side accidents.
- Under the hood lies a lot of highly optimised code and asynchronous server calls to make the booking process look and feel smooth and quick.
The delight is in the details
Yep, delight. Most travel companies don’t really focus on delighting their users, we’re not one of them. We’ve added tons of little touches, which, hopefully, make your travel booking “feel” happier. We all love to travel, so why shouldn’t booking travel make us equally happy?
Itinerary step
When we redesigned the Cleartrip Account, we introduced a uniform itinerary format, which was consistent on our desktop and mobile products. With the redesigned booking process, that uniform itinerary is now available even when you’re making a booking. For the first time, we’re introducing a compact itinerary view which is persistently visible throughout the entire booking process. The compact view contains essential information required for your review as you proceed with your booking.

Here’s what the hotel itinerary looks like

Sign in step
We thought we’d have some fun letting new users know just why they should get their very own Cleartrip Account, so there’s a raft of reasons displayed in a little yellow sticky note to the right of the sign in form. If you already have a Cleartrip Account, the message on the note changes. We’re not going to say what it changes to, see for yourself the next time you book.

Traveller info step
When we relaunched the Cleartrip Account, we added faster booking for friends and family by allowing you to store traveller names and extended profiles in your Cleartrip Account. That list of names is now available in the newly designed booking process. Adding traveller names while you’re booking has never been simpler or faster. If you’ve stored multiple traveller names and profiles in your Cleartrip Account, a list of their names becomes visible whenever you click in a traveller name field. You can click the name you want or just start typing to narrow down the list. All the available and relevant information for each traveller stored in your Cleartrip Account will be processed with the booking, including seat and meal preferences, passport information and frequent-flier memberships.

Payment options
Popular banks for net banking are pulled out from the list so you don’t waste time in searching your bank. None of the payment forms request contact information we already have again, significantly reducing the number of fields you need to fill out before you can book.

Expressway
One-touch flight bookings with Expressway just got a hell lot sexier — just one field to be filled out and one button to be clicked.

There’s so much more to the new design, but we just couldn’t fit it all into one post. We’ll be sharing more about our beautiful new booking confirmation pages soon, stay tuned.

The simplest check-out process just got simpler: http://t.co/HbmnLMNh
Vaibhav Malik- Sorry for the inconvenience caused to you. Please help us with your trip id and we shall get this checked.
Cleartrip, the redesign is great and reinforces the strong preference I have had for the brand. But I think you guys should kill off the pre-checked travel insurance option when one books a flight. I am sure it adds to the bottomline but it is just cheap-assery for people who love you so much.
Abhimanyu — thanks for the love. If you uncheck the insurance checkbox once, it will stay unchecked forever. We remember your preference and stick to that. It must have gotten checked by default for everyone when we rolled out the new flow.
Looks nice!
I appreciate the itinerary view, but I think the flight and hotel views have inconsistent emphasis on the important information (in the title).
The flight itinerary emphasizes (in the title) the flight departure, destination and date (perfect), but the hotel itinerary emphasizes the name of the hotel (but displays the accommodation dates/details below). I think the hotel itinerary should emphasize the accommodation dates, not the hotel name, in the title.
When considering trip organization, I think “flying New York to Paris [on airline XYZ] then staying for seven nights [at Foo Hotel]“.
(Or, for reverse consistency, the flight itinerary should emphasize the airline ; but I think that would be unhelpful as a page title.)
My 2¢.
But very nice, looking forward to trying it!
Richard — thanks for the thoughtful feedback, we’ll see what we can do to improve here.
superb!! Sexy! what about Train?
Train bookings unfortunately didn’t get the love, we didn’t have time for it. Hopefully sometime soon…
it’s nopt the redesign that is killing us, as much as their high handed ways and bad customer management – cleartrip is looking like a bad loser to me and recently i had the worst experience of my life – i had the misfortune of booking using my hdfc credit card – and not getting the discount promised – because they claim i did not key in the coupon code! the intuitive logic sucks – how do i tell the call centre jokers that i did key in the code, and the apply button is a hidden device to short charge us because no one in his right mind would go through so many steps(it’s a maze designed to cheat you, basically), and they claim to be honest, transparent, and above all, they also want to charge Rs 100 per booking per customer ———–well, cleartrip, thank you very much, i am happier doing it for the same price or less on the airlines site itself
Cleartrip did a good job on redesigning their booking processes http://t.co/evHftXr5

Vinay Arora – We are sorry for that. If the code was entered while booking, the cashback would have been calculated instantly & the net amount would be charged to your card/account. However, do let us know the Trip Id, so we can check.
well, i made 2 bookings one after the other, and one time i got it and the other i did not – it’s only a Q of Rs 600 but as a long term customer i feel cheated – it is almost as if cleartrip wants us to miss out on the discount(why can’t the system acknowledge that i did use a HDFC credit card(That is good enough), ) why have so many steps, key in code, press apply button – do you really think people are going to be so systematic really……………i am used to your ways and appreciate you run a business but please run it with a conscience or stop the fake discounting(its a booby trap) – ID is 1207197171- my point is very simple – as long as someone used the HDFC Credit card, you should have the decency to say okay here is the cashback, whatever be the technicals of the case! in my case my guess is i must have pressed the apply key lightly and it did not show up at all though i had keyed in the code. anyways if cleartrip thinks that a loyal customer is not worth it, they can keep our Rs 600 – we can always go back to yatra or makemytrip or ezeego1………………….the Rs 100 charge per booking is a devil in disguise too, my gut feel is that you cheat us by offering discounts while we save more on the airline websites – in the days to come, this will become more and more evident

I am a clear trip customer, yesterday i try to book 3 railway tickets from cleartrip. all of them are failed, and money debited from my bank account, after some times i got message in my mobile the money will refund to account after 15-20 working days, i am using most of the travel sites for various booking purpose like rail, bus, air tickets, like via, makemytrip,in that sites any failed transactions will refund within 3days
can you explain the reason why clear trip taking 15-20 working days to refund the money? why you are holding the customers money without providing any service? we are living in India, not in Africa we need only hrs or minutes to transfer money from one accounts to other account or card,in this case why this much long time to refund the money
