[Design nuances] New site navigation

With the launch of online bookings for Indian Railways yesterday, we made some changes to our sitewide navigation. We added a link to 'Trains' in our main navigation; previously we used to link to it from the site's footer as it was a search-only product created by Cleartrip's Research team. Now, however, the trains product is a full-fledged online booking service, so we 'promoted' it from the site's footer into our main navigation.

The other thing we did was to add an always accessible 'more' link to the main navigation. Clicking on the 'more' link opens up a small collection of the most popular tools and content available on Cleartrip.

We're quite happy with what the 'more' link has achieved as we felt that our footers were getting very cluttered across the site, The new navigation lets us visually group related items together such as flight-specific tools. Also, while users familiar with our site knew how to get to these areas of our site, new users had a tough time finding them. Finally, the new navigation scheme gives us the flexibility to use footers more efficiently by making them more specific and contextual to different parts of our site instead of being common across the entire site.

We hope you find that the new navigation has made getting around the site easier and faster.

I think you should have the main navigation as Flights, Trains and Hotels in that sequence :-). Anyways Good work

I was going through the site today and was looking for the Airfare calendar at the footer but could not find it there. Then I found something new - the "MORE" button and I found what I was looking for.

This is much more comfortable then to look for different buttons for various functions at the footer. I must congratulate the Cleartrip Research Team on th e good job.

However, I feel that this is similar to the more button on the Google home page and may have been inspired from there.

Whatever is the case I found this navigation much better than the previous one.

Flickr was the first large consumer site to do this, Google followed much later.

We think it's a neat way to organise the navigation for our most popular search tools.

Hi,

Your trains search is good and information page on how to do the booking is very informative. My suggestion is that on the information page please do post how the ticket would look like.

Thanks.
Ram.

Hi Hrush,

Does Cleartrip have their own software development team or you outsource? your site Cleartrip has world class usability standards. Its a milestone for usability engineering. One can use Cleartrip as a case study for any usability engineering practices. What is the inspiration for you guys? who is the user interface designer? I have myriads of questions like this as I am a user interface and usability engineer. I whole heartedly congratulate the team which created this world class web application. The notion "European Standards" should be changed to "Cleartrip Standards" for all web applications.

Santosh--thanks for the compliments, much appreciated. Let me try and answer some of your questions:

* All development at Cleartrip is completely in house, the quality of in house development is far, far superior to any outsourcing
* We have two designers, Varun and myself and all design is also done in house
