Cleartrip Mobile with Retina Display support

A few days ago, I was driving home around midnight and saw a line of people outside the Aircel store, all waiting to get their hands on an iPhone 4. It was an exciting moment for me, because more smartphone users means more users for Cleartrip Mobile. The iPhone 4 finally launched in India last week and by some freak coincidence, we just finished optimising Cleartrip Mobile to support the iPhone’s groundbreaking Retina display. iPhone 4 owners can now experience Cleartrip Mobile with ultra sharp clarity and crispness.

The iPhone’s Retina display packs four times the number of pixels into the same 3.5-inch screen which means sharper text and graphics. To take full advantage of the new Retina display we had to create a separate set of high-resolution graphics for the iPhone 4 users. This creates some overhead from a UI asset management perspective, but looking at the results, we think it’s been well worth the effort.

As with a lot of the Cleartrip user experience, we’ve used graphics very sparingly on our mobile site–the two key areas using images are the primary navigation icons and airline logos on flight search results. The level of detail that’s visible on the retina display is just beautiful. The first time we saw our custom stylesheets and images working on the iPhone 4, we were all blown away.

We’re still working on the final touches and just a few days away from a public release. Till then take a sneak peak at what’s in store for you.

Here’s a peak of the menu icons:

And here’s the new airline logos on search results:

In addition to crisp graphics and typography, iPhone 4 users also enjoy a host of features:

  1. One-click bookings with Express Checkout: your traveller profile and credit card details are saved securely on your phone so that you can make your travel bookings faster than ever before.
  2. Anytime, anywhere trip info on your phone: itinerary details, PNR numbers and other booking details are always available on your phone. When you sign in to your Cleartrip Account from your mobile phone, all trip information in your account becomes available on your phone regardless of how you booked a trip.
  3. Destination Guides: Comprehensive on-the-go travel guides to the destinations you’ve booked are available on your phone

If you’re a frequent flyer, add Cleartrip Mobile to your homescreen and you’ll be just a tap away from your travel.

Here’s how you do it:

While we finish up with the final touches, enjoy your new iPhone and make sure you give Cleartrip Mobile a spin. Watch out for a new & improved version very soon.
